COMMISSIONER'S MESSAGE

My heartiest greetings to you ! The new millennium is characterized by rapid changes in the entire spectrum of human activities. Due to rapid urbanization, leading to    exponential   growth in urban population, and massive technological advancements policing today, has become a greater challenge than ever before. Concerted, comprehensive, coordinated and     resolute efforts are required on part of police to carryout the herculean tasks of combating crime, maintenance of law and order, peace and tranquility in the society and to generate safe and secure environment. The policeman needs to be physically fit, mentally alert, emotionally stable and professionally sound. They are expected to discharge their duties without fear or favour to the best of their abilities and satisfaction of the people. Our response towards people should be courteous and respectful and at the same time it has to be   tough and unflinching towards the criminals. We have to ensure strict legal action against them so as to check them from indulging in unlawful   and criminal activities. I expect that each policeman belonging to the Commissionerate will discharge his duty with highest degree of integrity, honesty, sense of commitment and uprighteous approach towards the ultimate objective of serving the people. There needs to be a zero tolerance approach towards crime. But in all these endeavors police can not function effectively without active support, assistance and public co-operation. I   exhort police officers to provide better policing to citizens with special attention to the vulnerable sections of the society like women, children, senior citizens, physically challenged etc. I also appeal to the general public to give us their full cooperation and to join hands with us to make the twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar safe and secure.
The website is our way of reaching out to you, let you know about us and to known your concerns, get your feed back and seek your help so as to serve you better. In the days to come new features will be added   in making the website more interactive and informative and I seek the sage counsel of all the stake- holders and the citizens in helping us doing the same.

Why Volunteer?

People volunteer for a wide variety of reasons, especially wanting to help others. But it's also OK to want some benefits for yourself from volunteering.
Some people are uncomfortable with the notion that a volunteer "benefits" from doing volunteer work. There is a long tradition of seeing volunteering as a form of charity, based on altruism and selflessness. The best volunteering does involve the desire to serve others, but this does not exclude other motivations, as well.
Instead of considering volunteering as something you do for people who are not as fortunate as yourself, begin to think of it as an exchange.
Consider that most people find themselves in need at some point in their lives. So today you may be the person with the ability to help, but tomorrow you may be the recipient of someone else's volunteer effort. Even now you might be on both sides of the service cycle: maybe you are a tutor for someone who can't read, while last month the volunteer ambulance corps rushed you to the emergency room. Volunteering also includes "self-help." So if you are active in your neighborhood crime watch, your home is protected while you protect your neighbors' homes, too. Adding your effort to the work of others makes everyone's lives better.

Your Motivations

Think about how much you receive when you give and consider why you want to volunteer. You may have several different reasons. Here are just a few of the many possible motivations identified by other volunteers

The Right Volunteer Opportunity for You

There are many volunteer assignments available and you should take your time to find the one that best matches you. Start by thinking about the following questions
1 What causes or issues matter the most to me?
2 Do I want to volunteer for something that uses the skills I apply in my paying work or do I want to do        something completely different?
3 What would I most like to learn by volunteering?
4 What don't I want to do as a volunteer?
5 Do I want to work alone or with a group? Or with a friend or my family?
6 How do I find information about volunteer opportunities?
